This year I am so excited to try something new: flexible seating! The idea is that students are able to choose from a variety of seating options that fits best with their learning style. The options in my classroom include a standing table, a table lowered to the floor with pillows, traditional table with chairs, clipboards, tray tables, scoop rockers, and floor pads. I was drawn to the idea of flexible seating when I noticed in years past that students become very territorial over their desks and supplies. I liked that this new seating option can cultivate a feeling of community while sharing supplies and workspaces. I also love that choosing their own seat can help students learn what it takes for them to be successful learners. This will be valuable information for them as they grow older and get into high school and college, and even when working as adults.
