Hi Parents!!
Hope everyone had a fabulous weekend! I was at a meeting all day today, so I didn't get to see any of my kiddos, but I will be here tomorrow! It is that time of year to order 2nd Grade Class T-Shirts! The order forms will be coming home tomorrow. The shirts will say "Teasley Elementary Super in Second" around a Super Tiger in white. Our class shirt color is red. Each 2nd grade class will have their own color. We wear these shirts on Fridays or on special days like Field Trips. It is really neat when all the kids have the same shirt on! We can represent Teasley well and really see where all the kids are when we leave campus. Send in your $6 (or more for a donation) with your order form in the next TWO WEEKS! THANK YOU!!!!! This year, the Cafe is offering a special birthday choice! Parents can pay for the class to have a pizza party in the classroom! (Parents were told this information at Open House if you visited the cafe!)
We are so lucky because our very first birthday girl of the year has chosen this option!! It will be on Wednesday, August 22. Pizza will be delivered to our classroom along with fruit, juice, and cookies. We will eat and celebrate our birthday girl! IF your child normally gets a school lunch, this will count as their lunch (no charge to you). IF your child brings a school lunch, you don't need to send one in! However, if you want to send one in anyways, the choice will be up to your child whether they want to eat pizza or their own lunch. Can't wait! Hi everyone! I told yall at Open House that I would be updating the blog with specific academic information, and here it is!! Our first Unit of Inquiry is part of the transdisciplinary theme "How the World Works." Our Central Idea is "changing physical properties may affect classification." The Central Idea is supposed to be conceptual so that it can apply to all areas of academics and in all countries everywhere in the world! We have talked a lot about classification and what it means to classify. It was great for the start of a new school year because we have been classifying ourselves (by shirt color, lunch choice, transportation type, etc.). The Central Idea was developed to fit with our first Science unit about matter. Students will be studying objects in the world around them and how they can be classified as a solid, liquid, or a gas. Below are other topics we are studying during the next 6 weeks. We will be applying our Central Idea in all areas and integrating whenever possible! Math: We are working on... …mental strategies for adding and subtracting numbers within 10 fluently. This includes doubles facts (2 + 2, 3 + 3, etc.), doubles +1 (2 + 3, 3 +4, etc.), making tens and counting on (put the larger number in your head, then add the other number out loud or on fingers). …representing numbers to 1000 in different ways: base ten, standard form, expanded form, and word form. See photo for more info ;) …solving 1-step word problems within 20. For example: Sam had some flowers. 3 more grew in his garden. Now Sam has 19 flowers. How many flowers did Sam have to start with? We use a strategy called the Math Mountain to help students determine the number sentence needed to solve the problem. ...solving word problems using dimes, nickels and pennies using the cent symbol. Reading: We are working on... ...reading at a level I, J or above. ...practicing asking and answering questions such as who, what, when, where, why, and how about fiction stories. I generally try to focus on the first two parts of the RACE strategy at this point in the year:
